Changing webhosts

Why pay for webhosting when the company I work for will give it to me for free?

Not sure when it happened but I was recently tipped off that the old website couldn't connect to the MySQL instance anymore. I've now fixed that, as well as converted some of the database tables to UTF-8 so that their text displays properly. Moving to a new webhost really soon, for real this time. If anyone has any dirt on NixiHost, now would be the time to share.

I finished adding a dark mode theme and because it's my personal preference, it's the new default. That said, if your browser supports your system level light/dark mode options, you'll actually see the theme for whichever you've chosen. Only problem is that the Twitter feed only gives a choice of dark or light and it doesn't properly switch between the two yet. As such, the Twitter feed is permanently in dark mode until that changes.

It's been a wild ride these past few years. Maybe I should start telling the stories? If nothing else, I'm going to be moving the Realm to a new webhosting service very soon and I'll probably celebrate by adding dark mode support to the site theme and fixing the Archives page. I'm still not sure what else I'm going to do with the Realm, but at the very least it's not going anywhere and neither am I. See you all soon.
Edit: Ok so I fixed the Archives page, and I'm not sure that it ever actually worked properly, but it was a really easy and obvious fix.
Edit 2: Updated the Twitter feed and tweaked some CSS. Going to bed now.

While enjoying my day off for July 4th, I decided to make it a day to catch up on a few projects. First, which ended up taking a lot longer than I expected, is to overhaul my social media links here on The Realm. I haven't been happy with the original icons I was using, but it took starting a podcast with some friends to give me that push to finally redo them.

I wrote this post to see how Microsoft Flow handles taking an RSS feed update, and automatically posting it to my Facebook.

Funny how plans change over time. I never intended to go over a year in silence, but as everyone knows: sometimes life gets in the way. I'm involved in a lot of projects and events, both personal and at work, so perhaps I can extract a few stories or lessons to share out of those pools. Stay tuned, as I am still here...

After posting the previous article, I decided to make some tweaks and improvements to the Realm. Aside from updating the MODX backend, I've also added Live Tile support. I realize that the majority of people will never use such a feature, but as someone who is heavily invested in current Microsoft platforms I found it to be an interesting exercise.

When your job entails doing IT support, you occasionally come across some odd behaviors. While it's pretty common in line of business applications or niche software, it's not every day that you find a fatal conflict between Microsoft Office and an HP LaserJet printer.

Tonight, the first night of 2014, is the relatively quiet but long-in-coming relaunch of the Realm. Welcome. I don't think I've ever written it out before, so here is a history lesson on how eXonyte's Realm came to be.
